Makhana Halwa for me was an accidental recipe. While Makhana or Foxnuts are quite hit in my family and we love munching on them on and off. So one of the days I asked my kitchen help to saute Makhanas and not sure what she heard that she sauted and also powdered them. Now I didn’t wanted to waste Makhana, not to mention they aren’t cheap either.
It then stuck me to try out Makhana in this Halwa form and it was such a hit , that now I purposely powder Makhanas for this Halwa. Well this recipe is quite rich Calcium , Protein and Iron too. Good part is that you can make the mix and store it in airtight container and use it whenever you want to make it. A good baby food as well incase you have started nuts.
I make this for breakfast atleast once a week for my son and give him like a porridge with lots of raisins and nuts too and then when I want to have something sweet make this like Halwa and enjoy every bit. The texture is close to Atte Ka Halwa but with lesser ghee and much less hard work. Also this same powder can later be used in making Makhana Ladoos. You can actually find many other Makhana recipes too on www.recipedabba.com/cookbook. Hope you enjoy trying these recipes along with this Makhana Hawla here.
Makhana Halwa
A simple, quick fix recipe which is gluten free and nutrient dense too.
Ingredients
- 2 cups Makhana or Fox nuts
- 1 tsp Ghee
- 2 tbsp Jaggery Powder
- 1/2 tsp Cardamon Powder
- 10 Almonds
- 10 Raisins
Instructions
Roast Makhanas nicely on slow flame till they turn crispy. This might take couple of mins.
Add them in a mixer and make a powder and keep aside.
Now dry roast the almonds , cool them and add in the mixer to make a fine powder too.
At this point again add the Makhanas along with the almond powder, jaggery and cardamom powder in the mixer and pulse it once so its all mixed together.
You can store this powder in an air tight container and use it whenever needed.
To make halwa in a wok heat little ghee and saute 1 cup powder on slow flame for a min and then add 1/4 cup water and let it bubble till its soaked well.
You can cook it till you get the Halwa consistency you want and serve it hot with a garnish of raisins. As it cools down it dries up too.
Awesome!
thanks a lot.
